WBWCD draws the bulk of its water from spring runoff floodwaters stored in reservoirs which lie along the Weber and Ogden Rivers. In addition to these storage rights, WBWCD has various rights on the Weber and Ogden Rivers and various mountain streams which provide additional water and are incorporated into WBWCD’s distribution system at varying times of the year. During the year WBWCD is obligated to operate its reservoir releases and diversion dam gates along the river so as to allow prior right holders to receive their water rights in accordance with the River Commissioner’s direction.
During the spring runoff, WBWCD regulates flood flows in an effort to store excess flows in the storage reservoirs as well as reduce peak flows downstream of the reservoirs. This is done in an effort to minimize flood damage that otherwise could occur.
