The Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is looking for individuals to help maintain its Water Conservation Learning Garden and assist in water conservation program activities. Job Summary: Performs landscape maintenance activities on the water conservation Learning Garden and other district facilities. Assist in re-designing and installing portions of the Learning Garden. The employee will conduct tours of the garden for interested individuals or groups, and provide assistance as needed for water conservation program activities such as garden events, booths at community events, and teaching horticulture related classes. The job includes doing water audits within the District service area for individual homeowners or commercial properties. This involves professionally interacting with those homeowners and providing accurate and useful irrigation information for them. Specific maintenance duties include pruning, deadheading, weeding, disease & pest prevention, transplanting & planting. Candidate must have the ability to work outdoors in varied weather for extended periods. Work schedule will fit in on Monday through Saturday normal business hours with occasional evenings.

These positions will focus primarily on District facilities landscape maintenance and water checks with other activities possible. It is anticipated that work will begin in late April or early May, or for students it will begin as soon as school ends. This is a full time 40 hr. per week, seasonal opportunity typically ending in September or early October, or for students, when school starts.

Job Requirements:Preferred two years of college-level classes in horticulture, botany, plant sciences or related and a general knowledge of landscape practices including irrigation systems and water-wise gardening (Xeriscaping) preferred. Individuals who have completed the Master Gardener courses or who have extensive experience in the horticulture or landscape industry will also be considered. The candidate must have the following abilities:

  • Be able to share information with the public in an enthusiastic manner to promote awareness and interest in proper water-wise landscaping methods and principles.
  • Have a basic knowledge of plant materials and landscape maintenance techniques.
  • Be able to work outdoors in full sun for extended periods.
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Be able to use personal computer with a basic understanding of word processing and basic spreadsheet data entry.
  • Be able to work with others in cooperation or alone.
  • Must have a valid and current Utah driver's license and be at least 18 years of age.

Wage:$10.00 per hour depending on experience.

Hours: 40 hours per week from April through September. Work hours will vary depending upon weekly activities and events. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.

Closing Date: Applications will be accepted until positions are filled. Interviews of qualified applicants will be conducted in March and April. It is anticipated that 4 positions will be needed.
